Preventive Dentistry
Preventive Dentistry means
preventing dental problems from occurring, or identifying any problems
early so that they can be treated more easily and with minimal cost.
The aim of this is to keep your teeth and gums healthy for the rest of
your life, with minimum intervention on our part.
Preventive Dentistry begins with having an oral health examination
visit once or twice a year.
This visit includes:
- Detection of any decays or
cavities
- Evaluation of existing
fillings for proper fit, function, and aesthetics
- Assessment of your
periodontal (gum) tissue
- Evaluation of your smile
- Checking your bite, and
examining for signs of excessive tooth wear (bruxing)
- Examining and screening for
oral cancer
- Checking the function of
your jaw joints
- Recording any changes in
your medications and physical condition
We may recommend diagnostic tests including:
- X-ray photographs
- Tooth vitality tests
- Crack detection tests
- Impressions of your teeth to
construct diagnostic models
- Digital photographs
We may also recommend preventive services including:
- Cleaning and scaling the
teeth to remove all plaque and tartar
- Fissure sealing to help
prevent decay
- Fluoride application
- Floss and interdental brush
instruction
- Referral to specialists for
specific treatment
Oral health examinations ideally should begin with children around the
age of two to three years of age. By beginning early, we can help to
instil a positive awareness of the importance of good dental care.
